St. Andrews Brewing Co. Caird Hall, Dundee We were tasked with the challenge of creating a bar, restaurant and private dining area in the particularly large and deep floor-plan. The design solution involved zoning the space to form an intimate restaurant area, exclusive private dining area, an ‘inside/outside’ beer garden and a craft beer bar. The interior architecture is influenced by our clients belief in promoting the best of Scottish brands and ingredients. Conceptually based around the Scottish philosophy of ‘Còsagach’, feeling snug, sheltered and warm.
Function Suite and Wedding Venue The proposed extension consists of two simple volumes which reflect the use of the proposed building, with a function suite in the southern part of the extension, and the spa to the north. The extension is set well back behind the main elevation of the existing house and is partially hidden by the existing sandstone garden walls and the mature trees on the south lawn. It is designed to be as unobtrusive as possible and to defer to the original building.
The Hideaway Experience This is the third phase of the development that we have been involved in, creating two new bespoke hideaways back in 2010, then being involved in redesigning the original hideaway bothy. We have now completed the first of two new expanded Hideaways which build on the success of the 2010 new builds. Each hideaway is positioned to maximise the view and provide complete privacy for guests. Incorporating a south facing façade of glass, opening on to a large deck with hot tub, barbecue and outdoor spaces. The interior includes a spa room with bath, sauna, double shower and heat relaxation room. A large bedroom, lounge and fully fitted kitchen makes up the accommodation.
Ladies Lake The design concept is to, where possible, maximise the aspect to the sea in as many rooms as possible. The public face has been presented in a more sober manner with minimal openings which allows a transition from exterior to interior, which then reveals the sea views. The glazed balcony to the west cantilevers out over the cliff below. The basis of the structure of the existing garden has been retained, using the existing boundary walls and driveway as a focus for a new planting scheme. The opportunity has been taken to increase planting in the garden, moving away from the current annuals focus to attract a greater diversity of wildlife and introduce more native species. The clients are keen bird and wildlife watchers and will develop the garden over time to bring greater diversity of birds and insects to the garden. The garden master plan has been developed by Rankin Fraser Landscape Architects.
