This wonderful 3-bedroom apartment in the heart of St Ives overlooking Porthminster beach was a blank canvas. The newly refurbished apartment needed our full design service. The apartment was to have a sleek contemporary look that wasn’t obviously coastal and had a clear design influence throughout. Striking colours paired with soft patterns and textures throughout created depth in the scheme. The bathrooms were very dark, the client wanted them lightening up. Space was also an issue and we therefore created more space by converting both bathrooms into wetrooms. Our clients valued our honesty, experience and direction of the design.
The property is situated on the headland at North Fistral in Newquay. It’s the last property before the Headland Hotel, offering panoramic views of Towan Beach. The client had developed the property himself, making all of the design throughout. He came to Elaine Skinner at a late stage in the project, having exhausted himself with endless decisions on specification. Once he started working with the Elaine, he commented that he wished he contacted her sooner, something Elaine hears often. Elaine worked with the owner on finishing some of the details in sourcing and specifying. He then asked her to design and install the first show flat. He gave her free rein on design and she in turn gave a set fee for the brief.
The property is a late style home on the well-known Point Estate in Polzeath.
The client had been passed on the home from her parents. It had a very 80’s feel with dark wood frame windows, decorative doors and ironmongery and fussy details throughout in the bathrooms. Yet it was very spacious, and every bedroom had an ensuite. Being an estate house, they were all very similar and the interior was particular to the year of build. The next generation wanted to ensure that it was modernised but also given some individuality. They wanted it entirely re-decorated, completely refurnished and then some key design details added to create character and focus.

On the harbourfront, this Cornish cottage invokes everything you’d wish for in this setting.
The client had found the property at Savills Cornwall. They had looked for that perfect Cornish cottage and externally this was just that. Internally on first viewing, the property was okay, looking into detail there was much that needed replacing or renovating. The clients wanted everything perfect and functioning well. They wanted to arrive there, without facing maintenance issues or service problems. Some parts in each room didn’t work for them. For instance, the Living Room had no focal points for a fire, the utility room didn’t have any storage or surfaces, the kitchen had poor lighting, the bedrooms had damp storage and a lack of power points and good lighting, the flooring throughout was poor, the front door was rotten. The clients’ brief was to address all of this and create a wonderful scheme to decorate and furnish.
This property was in the heart of Mawgan Porth, close to the beach. The clients wanted a perfect beach retreat.
The clients lived overseas and wanted to turn this property into a retreat for them and their visiting families. When they purchased the property, it had a half-built large extension which Elaine Skinner remodelled to suit the original property.
