Camden Centre for Learning, London We had to coordinate the client’s wide ranging set of requirements and from them create a highly specialised yet affordable brief. The users wanted a building that felt like a school, but which was strong and secure enough to protect students and staff. We restored and adapted the Victorian school and designed two large contemporary extensions. This was carried out with extensive consultation with staff and students, local residents and the neighbouring primary school. Construction had to take place on a very tight site and without blocking the primary access route to the neighbouring ambulance station.
Bessemer Grange, Southwark, London This extension to Bessemer Grange Primary School provided a children’s centre, nursery and reception year classrooms. The brief included new entrances to the existing school with the overall aim to revitalise the original 1950s buildings. As a result, the striking new building sits prominently on the street, advertising the new and exciting developments at the school. The building was an early use of the innovative cross laminated timber construction in the UK. This alone sequestered more than 65 tonnes of CO2 from the atmosphere and the principle of sequestration was extended to all other elements of the building to minimise the building’s impact on the environment.
Hull Minster Ferrey and Mennim are fortunate to have a long term relationship with many of our clients, and since 1999 have worked with Hull Minster as their quinquennial architect and carrying out their fabric repairs. The works we have undertaken include the installation of photovoltaics on the roof and stone repairs and re-roofing the tower. The Minster is currently undergoing a complete re-roofing along with a £4.5 million multiphase reordering and redevelopment. This transformation will provide a new underfloor heating system, flexible space within the nave and new visitor centre and café amongst many other improvements.
